July 2019 Newsletter
Dear Parents, Carers and Children,
Please find attached our last newsletter of the academic year.
R.E Ofsted
I would like to publically congratulate the staff and governors on our recent RE inspection. We received the highest grading for our Catholic life, RE standards and Collective Worship. Our whole staff team truly live out their vocation and passionately display gospel values each day as they encourage and nurture the children. Thank you also to our parents for supporting your children’s faith development. And finally, well done to our children: the respect, love and forgiveness you display each day inspires us all and makes St Bernadette’s the special place it is!

School Meals
The cost of School Meals will increase to £2.10 per day/ £10.50 per week when we return to school in September. Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will still continue to receive free school meals. Can we please remind all parents that it is a requirement that school meals are paid in advance. ParentPay is method of payment. This provides an easy method of checking balances and making payments for school meals, Schools In/Out, school trips, uniform etc. If you have forgotten your password or require log in details, please contact the school office.
School Out / Maths Club
A reminder that during the warmer months KS2 Schools Out and Maths Club children are able to join the other children on the playground at 8.30am before the whistle goes for registration at 8.40am. The playground is supervised by a member of staff. If you want your children to remain in Schools Out/Maths Club please inform the school office.
Birthday cakes
As a healthy school and because of food allergies we try to discourage too many sweet treats. However, if you decide to give the class teacher a cake for your child’s birthday, please ensure it is ready to give out to the children. Please could we ask that if cake is brought into school, that it is cut and wrapped into individual portions.
June events
First Holy Communion
A group of Year 4 children celebrated the Sacrament of their first Holy Communion on Saturday 15th June. The whole class then enjoyed a beautiful breakfast provided by the Year 5 parents in school. Thank you to the catechists for their support in preparing the children. Also thank you to the staff and parents for their commitment throughout the course, and finally to Monsignor Hogan for leading us through the spiritual journey.
Summer Fayre (The Purple Pip Market)
Thank you to our small but dedicated PTA group who organised a really successful Summer Fayre (The Purple Pip Market) on Friday 29th June. Each class were provided with £20 as an enterprise project. Year groups came up with a variety of stalls to raise funds including sweets, lollies and unicorns craft!
Additional educational experiences
Last month, children have had some fantastic memorable experiences through curriculum linked visits. Nursery visited Tweddle Farm, Y1 went to Guisborough Forest; Y3 have been to the Life Centre and Trinity Catholic College for a Science workshop; and Y6 had a citizenship day, ‘Crucial Crew’ at Middlesbrough College.
Y6 Residential visit
Despite poor weather, the Year 6 children really enjoyed a 3 day residential in Minsteracres (June 12th -14th). As part of developing their knowledge of the Northern Saints and the beautiful landmarks of Northumberland, as a final leaving trip, they visited Holy Island, Cragside and Beamish Wild! The positivity, politeness and fun the children displayed was an inspiration to us all!
June Sporting events
Our children have been involved in a variety of sporting activities over recent weeks. Children across a range of age groups have participated in competitive cricket and football.
- Congratulations to our Y6 boys cricket team and our Y5 girls crick team who won their recent Middlesbrough Schools competitions.
- Our Y2 and Y4 football teams both participated in local schools competitions. Our Y2 had a fun filled action packed day of friendlies and our Y4 team finished 2nd!
- Our Y6 children participated in the Annual Diocesan Catholic Cup on Saturday 29th Four football teams (2 Y5/6 boys and Y5/6 girls) performed with a great attitude and did the school and their parents proud!
Sports Day
The weather held out for us all to enjoy a great whole school Sports Day on Thursday 27th June. It was lovely to see the children compete in a fun and enjoyable way.
Future dates
Open Day
Our annual Open Day, when you are all welcome to visit school at a time of your convenience to look and your child’s books and discuss their work with them, will be on Thursday 4th July. Please come in and celebrate your children’s work.
Reports
End of year reports will be sent home on Friday 12th July. If anyone would like to see a teacher following your child’s report please make an appointment through the school office. If anyone requires an additional report please inform the school office.
Drama Production –Hairspray- Wednesday 17th July
Y5-6 children have been rehearsing an end of year Summer Performance of ‘The Lion King’ for with Mrs Stoker and Mrs Simpson. This year’s performance is at Trinity. We would warmly invite you all to join us for this spectacular event. Tickets will cost £5 for adults and £2.50 for children. You will be available to purchase tickets from the school office from Monday 1st July.
For those of you who are not familiar with ‘Hairspray’, the junior version has been adapted for children from the film and hit stage musical of the same name. Set in the 1960’s, in Baltimore, USA, the story is centred around one girl’s dream, to dance on a popular TV show. The show deals with issues of discrimination on the basis of race and size. The content covers racism, personal confidence and social acceptance. The message of the musical is undeniably positive and progressive. With great songs, plenty of dancing and plenty of humour, this is a heart-warming tale in which good wins over evil and everyone lives happily ever after.
Gift policy
As a staff, we all feel very privileged to teach your children and your kind words and messages are more than enough thanks for the work we do. The Trust has a policy whereby gifts must be declared.
Lost Property
We have in school a number of items of lost property. Clothing and shoes will be outside (weather permitting) at 3pm in the last week of term. Please look and check for any items you may be missing.
Nunthorpe Charity Fun Day
You may have seen posters displayed around school relating to Nunthorpe’s Charity Fun Day. On Sunday 25th August, a family fun day has been organised at Nunthorpe Recreation Club, Guisbrough Road. There will be giant inflatables; live bands and stalls. This is a free community event which will also include a fun run. If anyone takes part in the run, local school children are encouraged to raise funds for their school. Please contact Jim Hayton at [email protected] for further details on the event or run and any monies will be gratefully accepted to the school office in September.
New website
Please check out our new website which will be live from next week. It is almost fully developed but there are some further features still to add. The format of the website is in line with the main Trust websites and can link you with other Trust schools and Nicholas Postgate news. It still has all the same features we enjoyed previously such as learning platform, parent communication, calendar, latest news, uniform orders (in Parents tab) etc. Please contact should if you are struggling to navigate anything you need. The new school website address is: https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk We will keep you informed of further developments.
Summer Break
A reminder that Friday 19th July is the end of our school term; we will return on Monday 9th September 2018.
And finally,
As we approach our final few weeks of the 2018-19 Academic year may we take this opportunity to thank you all for all your support and commitment this year. It is the greatest privilege to teach your children as they grow into mature young citizens of the future.
We look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks in school. If I don’t speak to you personally, I would like to take this opportunity to send my best wishes for the summer break, and to thank you for your support in helping our wonderful school be the best it can be!
