July 2022 Newsletter

July 2022 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

As we approach our final few weeks of the academic year may we take this opportunity to thank you all for all your support and commitment this year. It is the greatest privilege to teach your children.  To have such strong parent partnerships enables our children to grow into such mature young citizens who will make an impact in our world.

General

Y4-6 children have been rehearsing as part of Drama club for several weeks with Miss Cuff and Mrs Simpson.

If you haven’t already got your tickets to see Oliver, they are still on sale.  Tickets are £5 per adult and £2.50 per child.  Please see Mrs Simpson at the main Reception for more details.   All children and parents are welcome to experience this amazing show – don’t miss it!

Uniform 2022-23

Please note that next year we will allow children to continue to wear PE kits on their PE days (usually 2 days per week).

To support with costings associated with school uniform, we will also permit plain black trainers for girls and boys on PE and non PE days.  If you wish to purchase shoes for non PE days or additional trainers for PE days this is optional however no coloured trainers are permitted unless it is a PE day.

Please see in full our updated uniform policy via our website and uniform ordering link (Motif8) if desired:  https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/school-uniform/

Attendance

Attendance for June was 95.4%. A special well done to Year 3, who have had the highest level of attendance to date in this school year. They are currently at 97%.

It has been a challenging year for attendance and we appreciate your support in trying to meet our expectations.  Everyday in school is precious and we would ask that parents/carers refrain from taking children out of school in term time. Absence in term time is only agreed in exceptional circumstances.  A reminder of our term dates can be accessed via our website: https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/term-dates/

School Meals

As we approach the end of the academic year please can we request all outstanding debts are reconciled such as school meals / School’s Out via ParentPay.

Birthday cakes

As a healthy school and because of food allergies we try to discourage too many sweet treats. Please could we ask you not to bring birthday cakes to share with other children.

June events

SEN audit

Mrs Pennick had a SEN audit this month conducted by Katie Haycock (NPCAT SEN lead).  The audit celebrated Mrs Pennick’s strong leadership and excellent pastoral support to our SEN children and families.

First Holy Communion

A group of Year 4/5 children celebrated the Sacrament of their first Holy Communion throughout June. The whole class then enjoyed a beautiful breakfast provided in school on Monday 27th June. Thank you for your kind food donations; to the catechists for their support in preparing the children; the staff and parents for their commitment throughout the course and to Monsignor Hogan for leading us through the spiritual journey.

Holy Island – Year 6

Our Year 6 children enjoyed a wonderfully spiritual day on Holy Island as a final retreat before they leave us in July.  We had a beautiful liturgy on St Cuthbert’s Island, toured the views of the island and visited the priory to learn more about St Aidan, St Bede and St Cuthbert.

Rockstars

Mr Bourner through a launch and summary assembly arranged a fun competition in conjunction with our home app Rockstars to raise the profile of Times tables and securing early number facts.

Musical showcase

Mrs Conway arranged a Musical Showcase whereby over 50 children across the school performed to their class to demonstrate their musical talents (singing, piano, keyboard, ukulele, drums).  We are so proud of all the children who performed – well done, you are all so brave!

Sports day

Sports day returned on Tuesday 28th June and was hugely enjoyed by all children and parents.  We were blessed with good weather and the children enjoyed an ice lolly for their endeavours!

Year 3 assembly

Thank you to those Year 3 parents who were able to join us for the Year 3 assembly on Wednesday 15th June.  It is lovely to witness how confident the children are in displaying their knowledge through song and spoken word.

Trinity

Thank you to Mr Carey who visited our Year 5 parents who are considering Trinity for children in their next phase of education.  Mr Carey  asked us to share the following message:

Good afternoon Mr Conway and Miss Brady,

Please could you pass on my thanks to the parents who attended yesterday’s open forum.  I really appreciated the questions and the feedback they gave. My email is [email protected] should Y5 parents wish to follow up with any further questions or arrange a look around our school.

Thanks again,

Simon Carey

Assistant Headteacher (Trinity Catholic College)

We continue to work closely as an NPCAT family – indeed our Year 4 children had a wonderful, practical Science experience at Trinity’s Science labs today!

Sporting events

This month we have had a range of sport competitions across a variety of years giving opportunity for a wide range of children to partake in competitive sport:  Year 2 (football); Year 3 (Athletics); Year 5 (Athletics) and Year 6 (Football).

It has been so great to witness the variety of extended clubs on offer this year.  We are so grateful to our staff who continue to give their time to provide clubs.

Mrs Smith has successfully applied for Games Mark Gold based on our commitment to PE and extended schools.

Y6 Residential visit

The Year 6 children are currently in Robinwood – their delayed trip as a result of COVID.  They are enjoying a raft of outdoor and adventurous activities.  Keep abreast of our social media for updates!

Next year, the current Year 5 will return to Robinwood at our traditional time in October and we will have a summer residential in Northumberland – learning more about our local heritage.

Additional educational experiences

This month, children have had some fantastic memorable experiences through curriculum linked visits: Y1/2 went to Danby Forest; Y3 went to Saltburn and Y5 went to Flamingo Land.

Forthcoming events

Transition week

Next week is transition week in school. Children across the whole school will  spend the week with their new teachers and our Y6 children will be visiting their secondary schools.

In this first week of transition we would ask that you collect children transiting to Reception from the gate at 12.15pm each day (including 30 hour children). If you have problems with childcare for the afternoon please let us know.  Traditionally, we have found this transition week really helps the children coming to school full time in September settle into school life and eases them into the new changes.

Please note all other children should be collected at 3pm from their new teacher/year group exit Monday to Thursday.  They will return to their current class teachers on Friday afternoon.

Staffing for next year is as follows:

Nursery Miss V Simpson

Reception Mrs Pennick – 3 days / Mrs Andrews – 2 days

Year 1 Mrs Whitfield – 3 days / Mrs Conway – 2 days

Year 2 Mrs Smith

Year 3 Miss Lumley

Year 4 Miss Kennington

Year 5 Miss Cuff

Year 6 Mr Bourner

We are delighted to have the continued support of our skilled and dedicated group of Teaching Assistants who will be assigned to their classes and duties by the Leadership Team.

Ms Cole will unfortunately be leaving us in July.  She has been working as a teacher assistant in Y2/3 this year.  She is going to train to become a SEN teacher.  We wish her every blessing and thank her for her dedication and support to the school.

American Day

On Monday 4th July we will be hosting an American Day themed menu. If your children normally has a packed lunch but you would like to book your child on a school meal for this day please inform the school office.  Please See attached flyer for more information.

Summer Fayre

Thank you to all involved in planning our  Summer Fayre which is on Monday 18th July.  This year, each class have been provided with £20 as an enterprise project. Year groups will come up with a variety of stalls to help raise funds eg popcorn, ice-cream and photo booths.

Please contact the school if you are able to help set up for the Fayre or volunteer to help with a stall. Miss Brady is going to use an email group for the PTA to help with communications. If you would like to be part of this email group please let her know via [email protected] PTA communication email is: [email protected]

June Newsletter 2022

27th May 2022Paul Conway

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

Half term is nearly upon us again.  You are receiving our June newsletter a little early as we are about to begin our half term break.

ACE video

Miss Brady has created an excellent video which we have been reflecting on in our daily work and in assemblies recently.  In line with our school vision: ‘We will be courageous and inspire each other to excellence, shining in the light of Christ and making a positive impact in our world,’  we want our pupils to leave with knowledge and skills which will not only create excellent life opportunities but will also prepare them exceptionally well for life beyond our schools.   Our Curriculum intent is underpinned by three driver words taken from our ambitious school vision: Aspire, Courage and Excellence.

Please find below our revised video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/13V-95cpxuCsFcDYq44Nf1gCzbGXxIZo7/view?usp=sharing

Reception 2022

Unusually, we have five spaces left in our 2022 Reception class. If you are aware of anyone who may be interested in a place for their child,  please ask them to make contact with school as soon as possible.

There are only a limited number of Nursery places still available for next academic year, please ask friends to contact us asap if you know anyone seeking spaces.

PTA

Thanks you to the PTA for donating over £4000 so we can sources additional whole class texts, ipads and for subsidising the cost of school trips.   This significant contribution highlights the importance and value of our school events – every penny raised goes directly back to the children! Well done everyone!

Attendance

Thank you for your support in meeting our high expectations for attendance.

A special well done to Year 1 (98.2%) , Reception (97.8%) and Year 6 (97.6%) who have achieved the highest weekly attendance since Easter.  Our expected attendance is 97%  In House meetings each week we inform the children of the highest class attendance.  Children in classes who achieve 100% attendance for a week are rewarded with an additional play time.

A reminder that if a child is absent from school with an illness lasting more than 2 days, we will require a letter from the parent/carer. The Trust may also be involved in house visits for safeguarding reasons for lengthy absences or regular absentees.

Ear rings

A gentle reminder that all jewellery, except for a watch and small stud earrings, should not be worn or brought into school.  If pupils have pierced ears, one pair of discreet studs may be worn. Earrings must not be worn for PE lessons for health and safety reasons.

Walking home

Only children in Years 5 and 6, who have permission on Arbor are able to walk home alone.  If your child is walking home regularly, alone or with friends, please remind them about road safety and stranger danger and ensure they walk an agreed safe and publically visible route.

Sun cream/Sun Hats

Now the weather is improving please apply sun cream in advance of the school day.  Children can wear their sun hats and sunglasses at break/lunchtime but are responsible for them.

May events

Reconciliation

Many of our Y4/5 children are preparing weekly for their Sacrament of First Communion currently.  Over Easter they all made their Sacrament of Confession – this Sacrament draws together a deeper understanding  of God’s love and forgiveness.

My Mission

Thank you so much for your contribution to the Red Mission box appeal throughout Lent.  You and your children are wonderfully kind. We raised a staggering £500!  This has been sent directly to Mission Together’s appeal to support children in Malawi.

St Bernadette’s procession

On Friday 6th May we had our first St Bernadette’s process for Reception to Year 6 pupils. The experience is reminiscent of the Lourdes torchlight procession.  Lourdes of course is such a special place for us as it is where our Lady appeared to St Bernadette.  What a beautiful experience it was.  The children sang their hearts out and took part in a beautiful shared liturgy with Miss Brady and Monsignor Hogan.

Bede house retreat day

Each year we dedicate a retreat day to one of our 4 houses.  On Friday 20th May we celebrated Bede day.  St Bede (672-735 AD) was an English monk in the Kingdom of Northumbria and is famous for his scholar skills.

Spelling Bee

Miss Cuff organised our 2nd Spelling Bee last week.  This was a competition from Y2-6 to find school spelling champions and prizes were also awarded for participation and effort!

Well done to Florence L Y1, Edward G Y2,Bobby L Y3, Seth P Y4, Francesca C,Y5, Jessie B in Y6 – Our ACE Attitude winners in the Spelling Bee.

Spelling Bee Winners :Y1 Emily B, Y2 Daisy D, Y3 Eleanor Mc,  Y4 Annie C, Y5 Oliver W, Y6 Sebastian B

Y6 SATs

Thank you to the teachers/parents/carers of the children in supporting them through their SATs.  The children arrived early; they were calm, confident and really tried their best!

Y5/6 sleepover

As part of building a greater awareness of people who are homeless, we had a ‘sleepover’ in the School Hall on Friday 13th May to fundraise for the homeless. The children had a great time and took part in several thoughtful activities such as: team building games; simple eating and a liturgy.  The children contributed £10 and the money was sent directly to the DePaul society which supports young homeless. We raised £440, so well done everyone!

Relationships and Sex Education

A reminder that we now teacher our Relationships and Sex Education across the full year now and we no longer do our annual ‘Journey in Love’ week.  Please find a reminder of our annual coverage and content via our school website:   PHSE/RSE | St. Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School

Assemblies

Y1 delivered a lovely assembly focussing on the importance of Our Lady and Mothers as we began the month of May in reflection on Wednesday 4th May.

Y4 amazed us this week with their wealth of knowledge in reflecting on our ACE curriculum drivers.  What fantastic citizens they will go on to be and make a positive impact on the world!

Thanks to parents/family members who could join us.

Y3 pedestrian training

This week, as part of road safety awareness Miss Lumley arranged for our Y3 to partake in pedestrian training to build up a greater awareness of the dangers near roads and crossing safely.

May Sporting Events

We were so privileged to be chosen to view Emma Raducanu’s 2021 US Open Trophy on St Bernadette’s Primary on Thursday 12th May as part of the LTA Youth Schools ‘Emma Raducanu Trophy Tour.’  As a school that delivers the LTA Youth Schools programme, the LTA, the national governing body for tennis in Britain, have invited us to be part of the Trophy Tour.  As part of the tour, our KS2 children watched a special message from Raducanu and our Y4 children had an opportunity for an LTA Youth tennis session delivered by an LTA Youth coach.

April 2022 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

Thank you for your encouraging words and support at our recent Parent consultation. We hope you all enjoyed the opportunity to visit school and view the work children are producing each day.  We promise to continue to work hard to ensure your children receive the education they deserve.

If anyone had to cancel their appointment or couldn’t make it then it is essential you all see teachers for our termly consultation so please contact the school office to rearrange your slot.

Attendance

Thank you for your commitment to your children’s attendance and punctuality across the school this term.  Attendance for March 2022 was 95.8%.  100% attendance in March: w/b 28/02 Reception, w/b 07/03 Y3, w/b 14/03 Nursery, Y6 and Y4.

Each week we celebrate weekly attendance on our office display. We inform the children of the winning weekly class attendance in our House meetings.

Staffing update

We are delighted to inform you that Miss Rachel Kennington has been recruited to our teaching team.  She has been doing a sterling job as long term supply in Year 4 and will officially start from May!  We know you will join us in wishing her well in her early career – she couldn’t wish for a better school to embark her teaching!

Parking

There have been a number of local residents who have complained to school about a small minority of parents parking across their drives and being verbally aggressive.  This is clearly unacceptable!  Please ensure we are all courteous and respectful to our neighbours.  Also avoid parking on the yellow zig zags between 8am-5pm – this is for the safety of your children.  We appreciate it is busy around school at key times – this is the same issue at all schools.

Please can we encourage you to park a little further from school e.g around the perimeter of the school field (Cookgate/Clevegate).  Please note we have requested the presence of a parking enforcer who will issue on the spot fines for any illegal parking.

Tempest photos

Class photos were taken in school on Monday 21st March.  Once we receive the email link to view and order the photographs, we will send this by email. Photographs may then be ordered and paid for online.

Nursery places

Please note we are almost full in respect to 30 hour places for Nursery for September 2022.  Please contact the school office should you wish to enquire further about this and secure your place.

School’s Out

You may have seen the wide variety of activities which children enjoy in our wraparound provision.  Please be aware that we are totally flexible with our wraparound provision and we have availability for more children!  If you are now being asked to work from the office again, you are more than welcome to use our School’s In / Out provision (7.45am-8.30am or/and 3pm-5.30pm – £2 per half hour).

E-safety

We are aware that there are a number of children accessing apps at home such as Whatsapp, Tiktok and Facebook.  This opens up the possibility of children being exposed to inappropriate content, chat or images.  Please monitor children’s use of apps at home and if you require support with placing similar restrictions at home as to what we have in school please contact the school office. Please see a recent news article in relation to such:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-60854885

Job vacancy

Please contact school if you would be interested in a job in the kitchen. The hours are 11-1pm 5 days a week. We look forward to hearing from any interested parties.

March Events

Lent

We have dedicated the time of Lent to Kindness and Peace. We used Mother Teresa’s quote as our inspiration: ‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples,’

On Monday 7th March, all children were asked to decorate a bag colourfully, placing some small items in it, so they can share with classmates and spread love, peace and kindness in our own school community.  For all children who have returned a bag they will receive a ‘random’ bag to take home on Monday 6th April.  If you haven’t already please return your bag (or any bag with some small gifts to exchange).

The following week, Mrs McGouran, a parent of a child in Y4, led a Mission Together assembly.  Thank you for saving some pennies so that together, we are reaching out to children in vulnerable circumstances and supporting their physical, educational, and spiritual needs.  The final date for bags and mission boxes is Monday 6th April.

In an age appropriate way we have discussed the war in Ukraine.  The children have created a prayer wall of peace for the people of Ukraine.

First Holy Communion

38 children from Y4/5 have registered their commitment to the St Bernadette’s Parish Sacramental programme over the coming months.  Monsignor Hogan and the parish catechists will lead weekly preparation for Reconciliation and First Communion.  Please keep these children in your prayers.

Governor Visits

We are really lucky to have such supportive Governors who regularly visit school for events, to see classes and assess whole school developments.  In recent weeks we have had:

E-safety week

On the w/b 7th February all children across the school explored a variety of age appropriate e-safety themes.   Mr Bourner led a whole school assembly and this was followed up by discussions and activities relating to our whole school theme: “All fun and games: exploring relationships online” addressing issues so that all young people understand what constitutes respectful behaviour online, and know what to do if they encounter hate or bullying directed at them or someone else.   By opening up conversations around online identity, the aim was to help us work towards creating a safer and inclusive internet.  If you would like further information regarding securing your children’s technical devices please contact Mr Bourner or the school office.

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

We have been delighted with how the children have returned since January – in good spirits and keen to work!  It has been wonderful to witness such excellent attitudes and commitment to being the ‘best you can be!’

General information

Excellent attendance badges

We appreciate the difficulties associated with attendance currently but you continue to commit to our high expectations for attendance and punctuality – thank you!   Every day in school is precious.  In the House Meeting this month we gave 55  badges for Reception to Year 6 children for ‘Excellent Attendance’.  These badges were awarded to children who displayed an outstanding commitment to their attendance in the Autumn term.  They can wear these badges with pride throughout the Spring term.

Term dates

All term dates – 2021/22 and 2022/23 are available to view via our website.  https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/term-dates/  Over the last 2 years, the children have been forced to miss many days of face to face education – please be mindful of this and book holidays accordingly for this and next academic year.

School meals

Our new chef, Nicola Mason, is settling into her role with the support of our fantastic Kitchen team.  Our delicious school menu is on a 3-week rota and up to date details are provided via our website: https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/lunch-menu/   If you would like your child to have school dinners please inform the school office.

Packed lunches

In our school curriculum provision, we often discuss the importance of healthy living and lifestyle choices.  With this in mind, please ensure you encourage your children to have a good balance of food choices should they be on packed lunches.  It has been noted that some children have several unhealthy choices in their packed lunches and this is not conducive to the message we provide in school.  Please note we do not allow any products containing nuts. Please ensure that grapes are halved.

Party invites

Please be aware that as a result of some children getting upset recently we will only now distribute birthday party invites in school where the full class have been invited or a full group e.g. all girls/all boys.  Where not all children are able to attend a party please can parents facilitate their own way of inviting children.  Thank you for your understanding.

Please also be reminded that we cannot distribute sweet treats/cakes following birthdays in school.

Arbor agreements

We are still awaiting some parents to agree to our updated User agreement via the Arbor app.  We have reissued reminders where necessary this month.  If anyone would like to discuss certain aspects of the User agreement do not hesitate to contact Mr Conway, Miss Brady or Mr Bourner via the school office. Currently we cannot display children’s work via Facebook without this agreement.

Please also read and agree to our Trust Home School Agreement on Arbor which outlines our close partnership and expectations.

Reading and Times tables video

Mr Bourner has created a learning video to explain our rationale behind our Reception to Y6 ‘100 read’ scheme and our Y1-6 ‘Times tables’ booklets.  If you have not already seen it please visit our school website and please continue to support our initiatives either at home or as a regular volunteer – it makes a massive difference! https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/curriculum-support-videos/

COVID updates

We will keep you abreast with the regular changes to COVID guidance.  As things stand please be aware of the following:

  • Please be advised that there are a limited number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 within some year groups.  Across the country Covid-19 rates within the school age groups are increasing, please be assured we will continue to do all we can to prevent the spread of infection to keep our children and families safe. We would recommend that where possible children take regular lateral flow tests to limit the spread of infection.  It is the responsibility of Test and Trace to inform you where you/children are close contacts.   Provided they don’t have symptoms of COVID, close contacts can continue to attend school/work but are expected to take lateral flow tests for 7 days.
  • Please be aware that confirmatory PCR tests following a positive lateral flow device (LFD) test result are to be temporarily suspended from Tuesday 11 January. This is for asymptomatic people.  This will mean that asymptomatic people who receive a positive LFD test result will be required to self-isolate immediately and will not be required to take a confirmatory PCR test.  All positive lateral flow tests must be recorded on gov.uk: https://www.gov.uk/report-covid19-result
  • The guidance on symptomatic people (new continuous cough; high temperature; change of taste / smell) still requires people to stay at home and self-isolate immediately. You should arrange to have a PCR test as soon as possible. The guidance on symptomatic people is unchanged (new continuous cough; high temperature; change of taste / smell): If you have COVID-19 symptoms you should stay at home and self-isolate immediately. You should arrange to have a PCR test as soon as possible. If this PCR test result is positive, you must continue to self-isolate.
  • On Monday 17th January, the isolation period for people who test positive for Covid was cut to “five full days” in England.  People will be able to leave isolation from the start of day six after two negative tests e.g. Day 5 and morning of day 6.  Without 2 consecutive days of negative lateral flows, you must continue to self-isolate for 10 days.

Parent evening feedback

Thank you to all of the 66 parents who completed our November questionnaire. We were heartened by your responses as the staff have worked so hard to ensure your children are happy and progress well. We are proud of our school and our staff work so hard to make it the best possible school for your precious children.  A reminder that feedback was shared in early January but to view the full feedback summary and our responses in relation to parents who identified areas for improvement please click on the following link: Parent Questionnaire | St. Bernadette’s Catholic Primary School

Homework

Thank you to you all for all you do to support weekly homework activities.  Please also be aware that all classes have a range of optional creative, engaging activities in line with their termly work on class Google Classroom pages.

Recent Events

Synod

The children, staff and school community contributed towards our Synod on the future of the Catholic Church. It was heartening to hear how important faith and community was to so many of our children. We have collated this information and shared with the diocese, who will further collate all parish and school responses and send them to Rome.

Whole school assemblies

Each Monday we have our weekly whole school Collective worship linking to Sunday gospels.  This month we have also focussed on reinforcing our understanding of British Values and relaunched our CAFOD fundraising.  We have a green pot in each class whereby we encourage all children to bring 10p to class weekly from their own money.

Y6 / Reception Buddy Assembly

It was lovely to welcome parents to our Buddies assembly this month.  Buddies are such a special feature of our school family.  Our children presented a fun and loving assembly on Wednesday 19th January.  Please note a video of the assembly is available to view via reception and Y6 class pages.

Laudati Si

The Vatican released an encyclical by Pope Francis, ‘Laudato Si’ – Care of our common home’, in 2015. An encyclical is a letter circulated by the Pope to Catholics “every person living on this planet”.  In school we regularly reflect on the Pope’s message and identify ways to actively demonstrate care for our common home e.g. CAUSE hampers; fundraising (Reindeer run / CAFOD World Gifts); recycling and saving energy etc The letter is summarised in the following YouTube clip Laudato Si’: Animated clip for kids

Prior to Christmas, four of our Y6 children joined in a Trust wide singing collaboration.  Singing a song specifically written to summarise the key messages and the difference we can all make, to ensure that we care for our common home. We are currently learning the words of the song as a school.  Please view this AMAZING video via the following link: https://vimeo.com/662273490/2be9274a7d

Sporting Events

Indoor Athletics

Where possible, we aim for all children to experience competitive sport.  As such our Y4/Y6 (whole class) loved partaking in an Indoor Athletic event at Eston Sports Centre in mid-January.  Our Y6 children returned with silver medals and our Y4 children had a great day and were commended for their excellent attitude and behaviour from the NPCAT lead organiser.

KS2 Cross Country

Following trials, Mrs Smith organised for nearly 50 children to take part in a cross-country event at Trinity Catholic College on Wednesday 26th January. Despite the cold weather they performed admirably. Particularly well done to the following groups and children: Reggie and Verity in Y3, Theresa Y4, Luke and Amelie in Y5 and Henry in Y6.

Please can we remind parents not to attend unless permitted by the organisers of the event.

Y3/4 Swimming

As part of our PE curriculum Y4 will be engaging in 2 weeks of afternoon swimming lessons each day: w/b 7th February and Y3 will have their two weeks w/b 28th February.

Extended school provision

Mrs Smith, our new PE lead, has planned a range of activities throughout the school day to try to capture the varying interests of large groups of children across the school.  The timetable is reviewed half termly and further details regarding future clubs will be provided in due course. Should you wish further information on these clubs please contact Mrs Smith or the school office.

PE Uniform

Please can we once again remind you of our Uniform policy in relation to jewellery.  Small studs are permitted in school however they should be taped or removed on PE days.  The only other accessory allowed in school is a sports watch but this must not cause the children to be distracted from the class work.  If you require any PE kit please place your order asap via our school website or order directly from Motiv8 to ensure we all continue to look as SMART AS CARROTS.  If anyone needs support with the supply of uniform, please do not hesitate to contact Mr Conway or Miss Brady.

https://www.motif8.co.uk/schoolwear/primary-schools/st-bernadette-s-primary.html

The 9am performance will be for parents/carers only as the whole school (children) will see class assemblies at an alternative time. Whilst we appreciate COVID restrictions are lifting, it is essential we continue to keep our community as safe as possible.  To safely distance visitors, we can welcome a maximum capacity of 60 adults into the hall this term and therefore we can only invite two adults per Y2 family to the assembly (separated families may have 2 tickets per family).

Please contact our enquiries email ([email protected] ) or see Mrs Simpson at the office from Monday 31st January to request your places.

All visitors must wear masks, sanitise their hands, have a ticket and have no COVID symptoms.

Please note, we will also film and place on Google Classroom for any family members who cannot attend.

First Holy Communion

St Bernadette’s Church recently informed parishioners that the celebration of all sacraments from Baptism onwards would now be totally parish based. We have been asked to inform parents to direct any queries regarding this to their own parish priest. This would include the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion (our current Y4/5 cohort).  Hopefully, if there is sufficient interest, our children will partake in preparations alongside their friends.

E safety

E-safety continues to be at the forefront of our minds as we prepare our school children for the online world of today and tomorrow.  We would like to remind you that we have an e-safety week planned w/b 7th February. Mr Bourner has arranged a raft of engaging activities and the year group foci are listed below:

  • EYFS – Stranger Danger
  • Y1 – Divulging personal details

End of Year 2021 Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

As we approach the end of school term, may we thank you all for your support and encouragement this term.

Christmas performances

It has been a pleasure to witness how the children have embraced the Christmas spirit in recent weeks.  We hope you have enjoyed sharing the experiences with us in person this year and it has brought extra joy at this time for you.  We would have loved to have more but we hope you have been able to share your child’s performances via Google Classroom with wider family members.

There is currently a delay in us adding the Y1/Y2 performance; we will try to resolve soon.

Please can we respectfully remind you, following our Christmas performances, not to upload in-school photos to your own personal social networks.

Parties/donation to Church

As a result of funds raised from the children’s Christmas performances, our children across school have really enjoyed our Christmas parties over the last week – we provided snacks and selection boxes as well as party games and a disco!  It was such fun! We have also made a significant donation to the Church for their Christmas charity: Children of the Home of Peace in Jerusalem (£250).  Thank you!

Mr Lynn has announced his intention to take early retirement.  We are so grateful for Mr Lynn’s service at St Bernadette’s.  His sense of fun, love and commitment to our school and children will be missed by all.  He is looking forward to new adventures on his canal boat but we are sure he will visit school frequently.  #Once a St Bernadette’s boy….

We are delighted that Miss Kennington will continue as class teacher in Year 4.

Mrs Martin, our school chef of 15 years, is to retire on Friday 17th December; she will be a huge miss to St. Bernadette’s.  Our school food has always had an excellent reputation.  We thank Jan for her commitment and love to our children and wish her a happy and healthy retirement.

Future notices

Synod

The Synods of Bishops are due to meet in Rome in September 2023. As part of the discussion leading up to their consideration, ‘For a Synodal Church’, Pope Francis has asked for every Catholic throughout the entire world to be given the chance to voice their opinion concerning how we already journey together and how we may grow in future. As with many Dioceses around the country, Middlesbrough shall be conducting several listening meetings on a parish-wide basis.

Here in St Bernadette’s, these will begin during the second week of January 2022. The synthesis of our meetings will be sent to Canon Derek Turnham, Bishop Terry’s Contact Person, who working with a team of lay people and clergy will draft a synthesis of all the feedback from across the Diocese. This will then proceed through Bishop Terry to the Conference of Bishops of England & Wales, in preparation for the eventual Synod of Bishops in Rome.

To help us prepare, the Diocese have provided a link to Fr John Dardis video outlining the method we shall be using https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7EDySgbWogU

It is based upon Ignatian Spirituality and is already widely used throughout the Church. In the first week back after Christmas we will host our own listening session with children, staff and parents. The dates for our sessions will be on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th January.

Christmas Gifts

May we take this opportunity to thank you for your support and respectfully ask that you be mindful of our gifts policy in the lead up to the end of term.  The Trust has a policy whereby gifts must be declared. As a staff, we feel very privileged to teach your children and your kind words and messages are more than enough thanks for the work we do.

Buddie Presents

For a number of years we have been discouraging children to purchase presents for their Y6-Reception buddies however it still happens – it is a lovely gesture but not all children receive gifts and particularly younger children can become upset if they do not receive a gift.  Please can we encourage you to write cards to buddies rather than gifts this year.

Best wishes,

Mr. P. Conway /     Miss. S. Brady

October Newsletter 2021

October Newsletter 2021

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

What a great start to the year it has been!  Thank you for all your support and commitment to your children’s attendance, work and uniform.

General information

Attendance

Attendance for September was 96.1%.  We aim for 97% attendance across school.  Last academic year our attendance was 98.2%. We are very proud of our exceptional attendance in school and in such testing times, we thank you for your commitment to your child’s education and welfare.

Punctuality

Please be reminded that our school day starts from 8.30am now and all children are expected in at 8.40am.  There are still a handful of families arriving after 8.40am each day.  Once the school entrance is closed, the parent (or person bringing the child to school) accompanying the child into the school office, is required to record the reason for lateness.  Lateness to school can be a very upsetting and isolating experience for a child and parents are expected to ensure that their child is on time at school every day.

As a little reward for good punctuality and to develop fitness our Y1-6 children can partake in a weekly Friday run of our playground (8.30-8.40am) before entering school as part of the ‘Daily Mile’ initiative.

COVID

As previously communicated under the current guidance only people who have COVID/symptoms need to self isolate.  Currently,  if  there are positive cases in school or at home, there is no need for whole class bubbles, adults or children to isolate, unless they subsequently develop symptoms. Close contacts of positive cases do not need to self isolate if fully vaccinated, are medically exempt from having the vaccination or are under 18.   Close contacts will be advised to get a test and would be advised to continue testing using lateral flow kits regularly whilst other family members are isolating.  Any close contacts who subsequently develop symptoms must self isolate and book a PCR test.  Any children who display COVID symptoms (new continuous cough, high temperature or loss of taste/smell) must not attend school and book a PCR test, similarly any children displaying these symptoms in school will be required to be collected and book a PCR test before returning to school..

School Lunches

Mrs Martin and her excellent kitchen staff are continuing to trial our new menu and continue to provide fabulous school meals on a 3 week rota. The new menu is available to view on our school website: https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/lunch-menu/

The menus are currently being revised and we will inform you of changes in future newsletters.  School will of course still cater for any specific dietary requirements; if you want to discuss this further please contact the school office. Please can we remind you that the school needs 2 weeks notice if your child changes from school dinners to packed lunch.

Parking

The school grounds and roads around school are particularly busy again now that  we have moved away from staggered times.  Please be mindful of local residents and do not not park over drives or the yellow zig-zag lines.  We have reported the issue to our local councillor and are hoping traffic wardens will monitor the area as there have been a few concerns raised in relation to aggressive behaviour.  Please be patient in busy times and ensure you stay close to your children and supervise them crossing roads.

On Friday 17th September our children heard about the ‘Beat the Street’ initiative which is a fun, free walking, cycling and rolling game which gets staff, pupils and their families out and about in the local area, having fun and keeping healthy.  Beat the Street is designed to get children and communities moving by helping people to make small changes, such as walking or cycling to school every day, to improve health and help embed physical activity into everyday life.   Please engage in this if you can to help reduce some of the traffic congestion and get fit! ·

Sweet treats

Please could we remind you not to bring in sweet treats/cakes for the children following birthdays.  Several children in school have allergies.  Children occasionally receive small treats from their class teachers as an additional reward.

Contacting staff

To maintain the wellbeing of our staff, please can we politely remind you not to contact staff via their emails beyond working hours.  In the event of an emergency please contact Mr Conway [email protected] or for general enquiries use [email protected]

School Nursing team

The Healthy Child Service continues to be available to support parents and families with their health and well-being eg. toilet training, sleep, diet, and behaviour. This can be done face to face at home, virtually or over the phone. (Telephone: 03003031603)

RSE

Please be aware that following our consultation last year on our new Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) programme we will be teaching RSE throughout the year each week.  We are legally required to teach RSE. Our programme endeavours to raise pupils’ self-esteem, help them to grow in knowledge and understanding of themselves and others, recognising the value of all persons and developing caring and sensitive attitudes to all.  The programme we use is’ Life to the Full’ which is a fully resourced scheme of work.  Taught with a spiral approach to learning, in which pupils will revisit the similar topics at an age-appropriate stage through their school life, the programme includes teaching about personal health, physical and emotional wellbeing, strong emotions, private parts of the body, personal relationships, family structures, trusted adults, growing bodies, puberty, periods, life cycles, the dangers of social media, where babies come from, an understanding of the Common Good and living in the wider world.

The entire teaching is underpinned with a religious understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God. If anyone would like to discuss the content of your child’s learning further do not hesitate to contact Miss Brady or for further information please see our policy on our website.

PTA News

Unfortunately we did not have enough parents to plan activities across the year at our virtual meeting this month.  We will communicate plans to relaunch our PTA in the coming weeks so we can organise essential fundraising events.  The incredible fundraising, despite COVID, that the PTA has done in the last 18 months is of such importance to schools like us; we receive only a small amount of additional funds, so use this money wisely.  All the money raised goes directly to your children!

Safeguarding

In recent weeks all school staff have had their updated safeguarding training, including PREVENT (a strategy aimed at preventing radical behaviour).  We have been asked by Middlesbrough Council to raise awareness to parents of PREVENT so we are all aware of how to safeguard our young people from risk of radicalisation .  Please can you watch this short video (1 minute) from Net mums & Counter Terrorism Policing now: https://youtu.be/zMZaMiGudSM

If you have concerns and believe a young person or vulnerable adult is at risk of radicalisation please contact your local authority safeguarding team for Middlesbrough please telephone (01642) 726004 or alternatively please contact Cleveland Police on 101. Remember sharing concerns is not criminalising a young person or vulnerable adult, it’s safeguarding them!

User agreement

This month we have asked you to sign our updated User agreement which gives permissions for children’s photos to be displayed via our social media and asks for your support in helping our children learn appropriate behaviours online.  Please sign to consent to these agreements via Arbor asap if you haven’t already.

Governance

It is with great appreciation we acknowledge the support as a Governor to John Shiel and Louise Brady whose term of office expired in the Summer.  Their commitment and support to the continual growth of St Bernadette’s has been highly valued.  We wish them well in their future endeavours.  Nick Kane, a parent of 2 children in school, has been formally appointed onto our Local Management Board as a Foundation Governor by the Diocese.  He will assume the responsibility of monitoring EYFS and Foundation subjects.

September Events

New Reception starters

We could not be prouder of how our newest full time children are settling into school life!  Miss Brady welcomed our Reception children into our school family in our Collective worship on Monday 13th September.  It has been such a joy to gather together again as one family in the hall and to see our happy Reception children join us, it brought a smile to all our faces!  You and your families are most welcome to our school and we look forward to seeing you grow and thrive over the coming years.

Author event

This month our children have been involved in two virtual author events. On Friday 17th September, Chris Smith and Greg James, shared some of their writing with our KS2 children.  The authors launched their fantastic new title The Great Dream Robbery and shared top tips on creating stories and their best secrets for encouraging your pupils to unlock their limitless imaginations to come up with the best stories possible. Our EYFS and KS1 children heard from Gabby Dawnay and Ian Morris on Monday 20th September who have shared The Library Book, a story about dinosaurs, princesses, pirates, football and rocketships!

Cultural passports

This month we launched our Class Passports.  Each class has a passport which offers which activities they will encounter to ensure they receive the best opportunities at St Bernadette’s. Each teacher has tailored the passports to meet the needs of all children in the class. The children will receive their passports at the beginning of the academic year and take part in individual graduations as part of our House meetings once their passport has been completed. Our Y5 children have already had one enriched experience: 1st aid training.  St John Ambulance visited the class on Monday 13th September to deliver basic first aid awareness – what a great and essential experience it was!

First Holy Communions

This month many of our Y6 children whose communion had been delayed as a result of COVID received Jesus for the first time.  We are so proud of their commitment to their faith.  The simple celebration will be a memorable occasion for all.  We are also grateful to Monsignor Hogan, the catechists and families of the children.

We would encourage communion children to come into school in their communion attire on Monday 18th October so they can have individual professional individual photos at 8.40am.  We would advise they get changed following their photos so they can get their uniform photo also.  On this day we will also have a class celebration in the afternoon with the full Y6 class.

Monsignor Hogan will communicate plans in the coming months in relation to Sacramental preparation for our current Y4&5 children.

Extended schools Timetable

Our many and varied extended school clubs have now commenced. All clubs are free.  Please find below the wide variety of events we have on offer this term-sign up to these clubs via Arbor or by contacting the school office. Throughout the year all teaching staff volunteer their own time to facilitate the clubs, and we are so grateful.  We are also supported by Mr Peacock and various individuals who we ‘buy in’. Further clubs and year groups will be facilitated after half term.

On Thursday 21st October, 9.30am, our Nursery and Reception staff invite you to a children’s liturgy to ‘stay and pray’ with them and welcome you and your families into our school family.  The invite extends to our afternoon Nursery children and families – any parents whose children attend afternoon sessions are encouraged to come and should drop their children at the side gate at 9am.  Afternoon children can then be taken home following the Liturgy and return at 12.15pm for their normal session.

Residential meet

Y6 parents will have received this month information regarding our Y6  trip to Robinwood.  We would like to host a parents meeting on Monday 11th October, 2.30pm to discuss the trip in more detail.  We will set up a virtual link for parents unable to attend in person.  If you cannot make this meeting, please contact the school office should you require further details.

Tempest Photographs

Individual and family group photographs will be taken by Tempest Photography on Monday 18th October. Photographs will be taken in the School Hall.  We will only be taking photos of school children this year.  Children will be directed from their classrooms after registration for photographs starting with our Communion children then proceeding up from Nursery to Year 6.

Trinity Headteacher meet

As part of Nicholas Postgate Catholic Academy Trust, we work in close partnership with our feeder Catholic Secondary School. Mrs Dwyer (Headteacher at Trinity) came in to speak to our Y5/6 children and parents on Friday 17th September and answer their questions on Trinity. Mrs Dwyer is welcoming all Y5/6 parents to visit school for open mornings if you would like the opportunity to witness Trinity in action: 6th-8th October and 13-15th October, 9.45-10.40am.  If anyone would like to book an appointment please call Trinity on 01642298100.

Harvest Festival – SVP Food Banks

Miss Brady will be leading a Harvest Assembly in mid October as we will be collecting donations for the Food Bank in advance of our harvest preparations. Please could we ask for donations of tinned foods, bags of sugar, long life milk, and long life fruit juice.

Any donations will be greatly appreciated. We will start collecting W/C Monday 11th October. Please could all donations be brought into school by Monday 18th October so we can pack and deliver the food hampers.

Updated Annual Calendar

Please visit the website to keep abreast of our annual calendar. As much as possible we will stick with these dates/times but if we need to change anything due to unforeseen events we will provide advance notice.

Please note that we have moved the Y1/2 Christmas performance to Thursday 9th December as we have booked an in-school pantomime!

Please also note that we have a PD day (Teacher training day) on Friday 22nd October so our final day of the half term is Thursday 21st October.  We return to school after half term on Monday 1st November.  A reminder that we have a day off school on Friday 26th November in lieu of Queen’s Jubilee next year!

And finally,

Volunteers

We are once again in a position to welcome back our weekly volunteers to support with our curriculum work, reading and Maths skills.  We would really welcome your return!

If you are once again able to support us, please can you contact the school office, Mr Conway or Miss Brady.  Your support really does make a big difference!

Later in the year we will look for new volunteers.

Thank you in advance for all you do to support your children with homework, reading and times tables.  Reading and Google Classroom are now well established.  We have a school network to be proud of and together we will ensure we do our best to ensure your children are supported to be the best they can be!

You will receive curriculum newsletters outlining your children’s learning this week.  If you can support any specific curriculum work please contact your child’s class teacher.

Please do not hesitate to contact teachers, the office, Mr Conway or Miss Brady should you wish further clarification on anything in this newsletter or on how to support your children further.

Kind regards,

End of Year Newsletter 16.7.21

16th July 2021Paul Conway

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we approach the end of our academic year, we would like to thank you all for your love, kindness and commitment to school in what has been another challenging year.

Our children are a credit to you all and have shown such resilience in their learning journey.  We also appreciate the juggling you as parents have faced when we have had enforced periods of home-schooling. Finally, a massive thank you to our staff – your words of support have kept us going this year!  Like many of our families, several staff members have experienced personal tragedies in the last year and despite this they have continued to commit themselves fully to your children and our school. We really are one family at St Bernadette’s and we walk hand in hand though good times and bad.

Goodbye

Goodbye to our wonderfully unique Year 6.  You have ensured a strange last 18 months but have shown such resilience and determination.  We know you are ready academically, spiritually and morally to make a great impact on the world.  Good luck with secondary school and keep in touch! Once a St Bernadette’s child, always a St Bernadette’s child.

We send our love and very best wishes to Mrs. Davies as she retires today. Mrs. Davies has been a huge part of school life for 21 years. We wish her the very best in her retirement.

ParentPay

  • Please could all parents check their ParentPay accounts are cleared in full (dinner monies and Schools In/Out).
  • Payments for the Summer parties may still be made on ParentPay (if you have not yet contributed).
  • PTA contributions for merchandise may also be made via ParentPay.
  • From September – all dinner monies must be paid in advance.

Teaching staff 21-22

Teaching staff for next year is as follows:

  • Nursery – Mrs Whitfield
  • Reception – Mrs Pennick

*Mrs Andrews will teach in EYFS on her 2 days in school

  • Year 1 – Miss Simpson
  • Year 2 – Mrs Smith
  • Year 3 – Miss Lumley
  • Year 4 – Mr Lynn
  • Year 5 – Miss Cuff
  • Year 6 – Mr Bourner

Attendance

  • It is vital that children are in school each day to maintain strides made in their educational progress, wellbeing and wider development.
  • It is the expectation that parents will avoid a holiday in term-time as this will cause further disruption to their child’s education. Holidays in term-time must be in writing to the Headteacher using the appropriate leave of absence form.
  • Term time dates for 2021-22  https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/term-dates/
  • The guidance remains that staff and children who are symptomatic must not attend school unless they have a negative PCR test (main symptoms of coronavirus remain a high temperature; a new, continuous cough and/or a loss or change to your sense of smell or taste).  Anyone with a positive test must also self-isolate. This remains a legal duty after 19 July. Schools must retain procedures for dealing with suspected cases as they did prior to 19 July, including immediate isolation. School will no longer trace close contacts – close contacts will still be identified via NHS Test and Trace.
  • If your child/children cannot attend school for covid related absences, school will provide remote education for your child.

No more staggered start and end times

  • From September all children should be dropped off at school between 8.30-8.40am.  Registration and lessons will begin from 8.40am so the gates will be closed at this point and children will be marked as late if arriving after 8.40am.  It is vital children arrive on time so they do not miss out on vital learning from 8.40am.
  • Parents should continue to drop off children at the side gate on entry (8.30-8.40am).Staff members will be on the gate to welcome your children and supervise their access into school.
  • On collection – 3pm for ALL pupils, parents will collect from set areas around the perimeter of school.  Please collect the oldest children first and proceed to younger siblings exit points.  Please note Nursery children can be collected from 3-3.15pm.
  • Children must be collected by a designated adult and children are only permitted to walk to/from school alone with permission.  If you are collecting another child you must inform the school office.
  • Lines on our playground/paths will remain as a reminder to distance from each other.
  • Face masks are advisory for parents on drop off and collection but will not be compulsory.
  • Parents/children are encouraged to walk/cycle/scoot to school.

 Organisation of Children in school

  • From 19 July, the requirement to keep pupils in bubbles ceases, meaning that the guidance permits pupils to mix freely in schools, and that large gatherings such as assemblies can resume. ‘Bubbling’ may be reintroduced in the case of local outbreaks.
  • Children will continue to remain with their class ‘bubbles’ for large parts of the school day but we are really looking forward to sharing whole school / mixed group experiences in person again.
  • Children will return to normal seating arrangements as appropriate to their stage of learning.
  • Pupils will continue to use their own toilet areas and regular hand washing will continue.

Break times and lunch times

  • Some breaks and lunch times may still be staggered however larger groups will be allowed to be inside the hall and play outside together.
  • Each class will once again eat school meals in the hall.
  • The children can choose daily from the 3 week menu (attached)
  • Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children are entitled to a free school meal under the universal free school meals offer.   Normal charges will apply to all other year groups (£2.20).  Please inform us if your child is having a home packed lunch.

Please view the link for our new school menu https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/lunch-menu/

Homework

  • Homework will continue to be provided weekly via Google classroom.  It is essential all children know how to access learning from home if required for homework and in the event of enforced isolation.

Use of Equipment

  • All children will use school stationary with the exception that they may bring in and leave their own glue sticks/ coloured pencils if they want(no felt tips/Sharpies allowed).
  • All materials, surfaces and areas will continue to be cleaned and disinfected frequently.

Uniform and items from Home

  • Our normal standards and expectations will be expected for behaviour and work, therefore all children are asked to wear full school uniform each day, inclusive of school tie and black shoes.  Trainers will only be permitted on PE days.
  • On PE days (Reception to Year 6) children will be expected to wear purple hoodies, house colour tops, plain blue shorts and trainers.  No branded clothing is allowed.  We have been so pleased with how you have embraced this change this year – the children look smart as carrots!   We will inform you of PE days in September.
  • If anyone needs support with uniform orders please contact the school office.

Uniform orders can be placed via the school website https://www.motif8.co.uk/schoolwear/primary-schools/st-bernadette-s-primary.html

    • Children should bring limited items to school other than reading books, coats, sun hats and water bottles. Sun cream should be applied before arriving.  (still WATER only- no juice allowed / books/ lottos will be changed twice weekly.
    •   Sun cream should be applied before arriving.
  • Uniform orders can be placed via the school website https://www.motif8.co.uk/schoolwear/primary-schools/st-bernadette-s-primary.html

Contact with School

  • All contact with school should be via telephone and email.
  • In recent weeks a number of staff have been receiving emails from parents after 6pm. Please can we respectfully ask that from now on any queries beyond working hours be directed to our school enquires email ([email protected] ) or in an the event of emergency then use Mr Conway’s email [email protected]
  • Please ensure that we have your most up to date contact details and that you are able to be contacted throughout the day.

Wraparound care

  • Our Schools In and Out service will be open from Thursday 2nd September (7.45am-5.30pm).
  • Schools In children will access school through the main office entrance and be registered on entry. Children in School’s In will be taken from the hall to class from 8.30am.
  • Children remaining in school after 3pm will be taken to School’s Out by their teachers. On collection, parents should ring the bell and wait for their child in the holding bay in the office or outside.
  • Currently charges are applied as follows:
    SCHOOL’S IN:   7.45am-8.40am £4  and   8.20am -8.40am £2
  • SCHOOL’S OUT:  3pm-5.30pm   –    £4 per hour / £2 per half hour

Precautions

We will continue to take precautions in line with DFE guidance such as:

  • a thorough and deep clean of the whole school prior to the return of all children
  • enhanced cleaning, including cleaning frequently touched surfaces more often
  • ensuring everyone at school continues to clean their hands regularly – this will be both hand soap and hand sanitiser (please inform school if you do not want your child to use alcohol based sanitiser)
  • ensuring good respiratory hygiene, by promoting the ‘catch it, bin it, kill it’ approach
  • regular opportunities for outdoor development and good ventilation to minimise risk of spread
  • generally staff will not wear PPE unless necessary for personal or intimate care.

And finally,

As a school, we will continue to do all we can to minimise risk and operate a safe learning environment but please be prepared for changes as we assess the impact of these changes in September and as guidance changes. We hope this long and detailed letter provides you with the information you need to prepare yourselves and your children for September.

In the meantime, have a wonderful summer holiday, remember our Reading and Times tables challenge and we look forward to welcoming you back from Thursday 2nd September.

If you need any further guidance or information please do not hesitate to make contact.

With thanks for your support,

Mr P Conway (Headteacher) and Miss S Brady (Head of School)

July Newsletter

Dear Parents, Carers and Children,

As we approach our final few weeks of the academic year may we take this opportunity to thank you all for all your support and commitment this year. We have experienced an unusual year to say the least but hope is very much in sight as a result of the successful roll out of the vaccine!

General

Mr Peacock

Please keep our lovely Mr Peacock in your thoughts as he undergoes some medical treatment.  Mr Peacock teaches PE across Y1-6.  He will continue to come into school as he can and we wish him our love and prayers in the coming months.

Mrs Davies

It is with great sadness that we say goodbye to Mrs Davies in July after 21 years in the role.  She is an excellent upper Key Stage 2 teaching assistant and her knowledge and commitment to school life will be missed by all of us.  Mrs Davies is looking forward to spending  time with her growing family and pursuing her sporting interests!

Suncream

Please ensure you apply sun cream in advance of children coming to school in the summer months.  We are unable to apply suncream.  Children are also encouraged to bring sun hats and bottles of water.

Birthday cakes

As a healthy school and because of food allergies we try to discourage too many sweet treats, however if you decide to give the class teacher a cake for your child’s birthday please ensure it is ready to give out to the children.  School staff cannot spend time away from children cutting cakes!

June events

Governor visits

We are fortunate to have a really proactive governing body who do all they can to monitor how our children receive the best education they possibly can:

  • Mary Bilous, our Chair of Governors, visits school weekly to change books and lottos in Y1 and meet with Mr Conway/Miss Brady
  • Paul Benfield, a Foundation Governor, met with Miss Cuff this month to discuss developments in our wider curriculum.  They discussed current books and next year’s planned changes – rather than teach a full term in our Y1-6 Topic work (History, Geography, Art, DT), we will teach the units in smaller, interleaved blocks.
  • Laura Cutler, a Foundation Governor, met with Miss Brady to look at our RE books and Collective worship practice.
  • Louise Brady, a Foundation Governor, met with Miss Brady to assess the EYFS developments including use of the outdoor area.

Mrs Brady will be stepping down from her role as Foundation Governor at the end of this academic year.   As a former teacher at St Bernadette’s, she had a deep understanding of our school and her knowledge, support, empathy and challenge made her a great Governor. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Brady for her time and commitment to our school.

Safeguarding review

On Tuesday 22nd July we had a full Trust safeguarding review.  It was a comprehensive overview of all aspects of school safeguarding.  We are pleased to inform you that the audit was very positive and confirmed our vigilant adherence to safeguarding protocols.

Bede day

This year we have tried to increase our children’s understanding and appreciation of the impact our local Saints had on our area and Christianity. On 11th June, all children across the school learnt more about St Bede. who was an English Benedictine monk at the monastery in the Kingdom of Northumbria.  He is well known as an author, teacher and scholar.

PTA Uniform stall

On Thursday 17th and Friday 18th June we held a uniform stall in school.   Thank you to all who contributed quality items of clothing.  Also a huge thank you to Helen Gilpin (and her mum), a parent of 2 boys in Y1, who gave up her time to prepare the uniform and display the items each day.  We are so grateful for her support.  There are a few items remaining if anyone did not have a chance to see the stall.  The uniform stall raised £57.00 which will all go to PTA funds.

Sports day

Thank you for your understanding in relation to Sports day.  We were hoping that we would be able to have parents on site to witness this fun, annual event.  The children enjoyed their Sports days and we hope you saw the many pictures shared via Twitter.  We hope from September restrictions will allow your presence on site to join us at joyous events like this.

Y6 events

Y6 have enjoyed several special end of year activities: as they missed their residential this year they went to Carlton for a day of outward bound adventures and they have had various fitness, transition and sport workshops.

July events

Reading books/Homework

Please note that Reading books will be collected from next week. We would encourage you to access our online materials.  A reminder of how to access the online materials is provided by a video on our school website (Logging in support for our online reading books (Oxford Reading Tree and AcceleratedReader ): https://stbernadettes.npcat.org.uk/curriculum-support-videos/

If you need any support accessing independent reading books online please contact the school office or your child’s class teacher.

Please note we will also not be sending homework on Google Classroom from next week.

Stokesley Open Gardens

On Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th July Stokesley Gardens returns.  You can discover the secrets of Stokesley’s best-kept gardens, with the proceeds of the event supporting Teesside Hospice.

New Reception starters

On Monday 5th July, we will be holding our new Reception starters meeting for parents.  This year we will be having a virtual meet.  The meeting will be from 9-10am.  Video call link: ttps://meet.google.com/nfq-zydp-vfh

Postgate Day

On Friday 9th July, we will celebrate Postage day in school.  All children (N-Y6) are encouraged to wear their own clothes with a splash of yellow.

Reports

End of year reports will be sent home on Friday 9th July. If anyone would like to see a teacher following your child’s report please make an appointment through the school office.   We will also inform you of your child’s new class teacher at this point.

Transition days

At this stage we have decided to shorten our in school transition period this year.  We are hopeful this will still go ahead.  The plan is for all children to move into their new year group to meet their new teachers and get used to new routines on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th July.  This period traditionally really helps the children settle and hit the ground running in September. If anything changes we will let you know.  The children will return to their present class on Wednesday 14th July.

Secondary schools transition has been altered as a result of the delay to lockdown restrictions – secondary schools are liaising directly with Y6 parents in relation to rearranged plans.  All secondary school partners have been invited into school to meet children also.

PTA School merchandise

St Bernadette’s merchandise has now arrived and is available to purchase via Parentpay.  Please order the following items on Parentpay by Tuesday 13th July and we will distribute them to children on Wednesday 14th July / Thursday 15th July.  We have added separate payment options for all

  • St Bernadette’s wristbands: £2.50
  • Unicorn keyrings: £2
  • Hope Rainbow pin badges: £2
  • St Bernadette Mugs:  £5.00
  • St Bernadette Pencils:  £1.00
  • St Bernadette Coasters: £2.00

Nursery to Year 5 Class Parties (Wednesday 14th July)

On Wednesday 14th July, Nursery to Year 5 children can wear their own clothes for the day and will play some fun games (in class and out of class) in their bubbles in the morning.  In the afternoon they will enjoy some snacks and a film (U/PG).  We are asking for a minimum £3 donation towards the  associated costs for the activities for the day’s events.

Please note although Year 6’s will have their class party on Thursday 15th July (as detailed below)

Year 6 leavers events:

  • Wednesday 7th July

.Y6 children need to come to school in full school uniform for the ‘Leavers liturgy’ but can bring their own clothes to change into after in preparation for their disco.

First Holy Communion

Over the last week, we have had discussions with Monsignor Hogan regarding completing our First Holy Communion programme with our current Y5 cohort.  As you will appreciate, guidance in relation to COVID still compromises celebrating First Holy Communion in full but Monsignor is hopeful that either:

  1. The communions will take place one at a time on a weekend Mass
  2. Holding the Sacrament over a number of weekends in September.

Monsignor will clarify these options after the next announcement in mid July.

Monsignor is happy for you to contact him via the parish number, Church email  ([email protected])  or Parish Facebook for further details/clarification.

A reminder that Monsignor will communicate information regarding the programme for our current Y3/4 children following completion of the Y5 programme.

And finally,

Gift policy

As a staff, we all feel very privileged to teach your children and your kind words and messages are more than enough thanks for the work we do.  The trust has a policy whereby gifts must be declared.  Therefore we would urge you not to organise leaver’s gifts for school staff.

Uniform

Advance notice:  We expect children to continue wearing PE kits on PE days next year but we will be asking children to return to wearing shoes on non PE days.

Many thanks for your support in ensuring our children look ‘smart as carrots!’ each day in the way they dress and with their sensible hairstyles. Please order uniform via the website or direct from Motif8  https://www.motif8.co.uk/schools/primary-schools-s-z/st-bernadettes-primary.html

School Meals

A reminder that school meals must be paid for in advance. This may be done weekly, monthly or termly. If your child is absent from school, you will not be charged for any meals that they do not take. Please check ParentPay regularly to ensure that your school meal account remains in credit.

School’s Out closure

Please note there will be no ‘School’s out’ service on Thursday 15th July after school due to a staff retreat evening. Apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.  school’s Out will be open as normal on Friday 16th July.

Summer Break

Friday 16th July is the end of our school term  (No Nursery sessions this day)

We have a PD day on Wednesday 1st September and Nursery and Y1-6 children will return on Thursday 2nd September.  Please note that New Reception children will return either Thursday 2nd September or Tuesday 7th September depending on their agreed starting date.

We look forward to seeing you over the next few weeks on drop off and collection at school.  If we don’t see you personally, best wishes for the summer break.

Yours sincerely,

Mr P Conway and Miss S Brady

Headteacher  / Head of School
