Reception is part of the Foundation Stage. We share a setting with Nursery!

Our teachers are Mrs Pennick and Mrs Conway. Mrs Maguire works with us every day too. We are so lucky!

We always have the most fun and love to learn through play.

There are 26 children in our class. Although we are a small class we are packed with joy and positivity. Our Catholic Social Teaching Strand is Common Good. Our class mascot is Chokondi. We try to spread love and joy in everything we do. Every Thursday we walk to church to join parishioners for morning mass. We love seeing them.

During the Spring Term our themes are Traditional Tales and Growing

Personal and social – Children are to show sensitivity to others needs and feelings and form positive relationships with adults and children. They are to grow in confidence trying new activities, say what they are good at and say why they like some activities more than others. Children are to ask for help when they need it. They are also learning how to stay safe.

Communication – Children listen to a range of fairy-tale stories and accurately anticipate key events and respond to what they hear. They discuss the plot and characters in more detail as they also retell stories that they are familiar with. Children are to begin to follow several ideas and actions. They are to answer how and why questions about their experiences and in response to fairy-tale stories or events.

Physical – Children will improve their fine motor skills including: practising handwriting, cutting with scissors, using their knife and fork, colouring in and drawing. We will focus on throwing, catching and coordination/moving with control skills as part of the PE unit dance, gymnastics and personal challenges. Children are to show good control and co-ordination in large and small movements. Children are to explore a range of movements to create a gymnastic sequence.

Literacy – Children are to learn how to form letters accurately, recognise letters and be able to identify these letters at the beginning and within words. We will continue to learn how to sound out, blend, read and write words. Children will begin to write simple sentences. They will listen to and make up their own stories. Children will write character descriptions and predict what will happen next in stories. They will label diagrams/pictures. In Phonics we follow Little Wandle, and will be focusing on phase 3 phonics.

Mathematics – Children will use subitising and will use dots and tallies to represent numbers. They will continue to practice counting to 20, count objects to 10 and then 20 and recognise and order numbers to 20. Children will add 2 single digit numbers up to 10 and subtract single digit numbers from 10. We will be exploring 2D and 3D shapes and identifying, continuing and making our own patterns. We will also be investigating measures including length, mass and capacity.

Topic – We will be exploring the different parts of a plant. Children will create houses, castles, instruments and other crafts linked to the fairy-tales we will be reading. They will paint a range of fairy-tale characters, build models and create character masks. We will also be learning about the British Isles with a focus on Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland before exploring other European countries.
