Welcome
Welcome to Year 1 at St Bernadette’s.
In Year 1 you are taught by Mrs Whitfield and Mrs Andrews and we are lucky to have
Mrs Braithwaite support us too. We currently have 27 wonderful children in our class,
plus Daisy the Dove (our class mascot). Daisy supports us to promote our Catholic
Social Teaching strand ‘Peace’.
Our class is always busy, we are very hard working and we have great fun. We have
a wonderful classroom in Year 1 where we can continue to develop areas following
the same learning environment as EYFS with space for more structured learning. We
continue to use play based approaches while gradually implementing a more formal
curriculum.
In Year 1 we focus lots on phonics and reading. We love learning how to say words
using our phonic knowledge which promotes our love for reading. The children read
every day in class and as adults we love to read to them too! As well as listening to
your child read, we encourage you to read to your child as often as you can.
We love to invite parents in to school as often as we can, so please look at the
school calendar for important dates.
